The ocean gains its name from the Greek arktos for “bear,” referring to the northern constellation of stars called the Great Bear (Ursa Major in Latin), otherwise known as the Big Dipper.
The Andes themselves were created by the oceanic plate pushing against the continent, buckling the continental crust into mountains. At a trench where two oceanic plates collide, both plates are of similar density but nevertheless one slides beneath the other. As in an oceanic plate–continental plate collision, earthquakes are triggered and volcanoes are produced, but the volcanoes often erupt under the sea rather than on a continent. If the volcanoes rise all the way to the sea surface, they produce an arc of islands, such as the Aleutian Islands off Alaska or the Mariana Islands of the western Pacific.
Part of the reason for this is that when space debris collides at high speed, it releases its energy of movement as heat. When Earth began to assemble from this debris, it also contained many radioactive chemicals (those that break down of their own accord to release large amounts of energy). This generated more heat. The young planet Earth therefore formed as a fiery ball of melted substances. Within Earth the substances arranged themselves according to their density (heaviness). Under Earth’s gravitational pull, less dense (lighter) material floated to the planet’s surface, while denser (heavier) substances sank to the center of the planet.
