R. ZIMMERMANN, C. R. GEIST, AND D. A. STROBEL The results of the studies discussed above may be summarized as follows. The dietary variable does not appear to affect the performance of the developing malnourished monkey on delay response, learning set, longor short-term memory, object discrimination, objectquality discrimination, or simple reversal learning. H01vever, the dietary factor appears to be a highly significant variable in the responses of the low-protein animals to new and novel sources of stimulation and in all tasks which produce a stimulus-response, stimulusreinforcement, or response-reinforcement discontiguity, such as reversal learning to central-cue stimuli, conditional learning, embedded-figures task, and cross-string problems.
And the locus of the cue was increased. Figure 12 depicts a typical response to these stimuli with the animal touching the periphery of the card. Pairs of stimuli were introduced to the animals in a learningset paradigm in which six trials per problem and five problems per day were presented in a randomized Latin-square sequence. As found in other learning tasks, the groups did not differ in ability to learn the original problem. However, when placed on reversal problems, the low-protein monkeys were inferior to BEHAVIORAL DEFICIENCIES IN PROTEIN-DEPRIVED MONKEYS 53 FIGURE 12.
