That is, I would expect the patient, as a result of working through repeated miscommunications and misunderstandings in the analysis, eventually to deal differently with disruptive situations. For example, instead of decompensating she might at some future date call attention to the fact that the therapist is, in her opinion, mistaken in his assumption, whatever that assumption may be. In this way, the patient would be demonstrating that she had indeed acquired new psychic structure—a relatively stable and more optimal way of functioning with stress in her relationships.
The more general problem is that the authors provide no model of development by which the analyst can assess the level of maturation that has been reached by the patient and devise a phase-appropriate complementary response. These decisions, like decisions regarding interpretation and appraisals of pathology, would depend on classifications and evaluations the analyst has derived from other sources, which are not explicated.
