Words here come easily. Yet a preference for peace involves much more than sentimental gestures. It means learning to confront the ways in which we demean and exploit human beings through how our economy works; the trade policies that ensure a supply of cheap resources to maintain our way of life; the extraordinary proportion of our national wealth that is used to build weapons and our frequent use of them to ensure our political hegemony; our preference for competitive rather cooperative social relations; and all the ways we 18 E duc at i ng You t h f or a Wor l d be y on d Viol e nc e marginalize and dehumanize others because of our fear of difference.
Before long, some students introduce the less visible forms of violence that are implicit in our way of life: the sweat shops that produce our clothing, electronic items, and home furnishings in which people work in lifedamaging situations; the poultry plants in our state in which mainly foreign workers toil in oppressive and dangerous conditions; farm workers who pick fruit and vegetables while exposed to carcinogenic pesticides. And other students remind the class about the pain and suffering inflicted on animals who are reared in inhumane conditions of gross overcrowding, the inability to move around, the lack of exposure to natural conditions of sunlight and pasture, and finally terrifying forms of slaughter.
These people are able to break out of the closed “bubble” of understanding and attitudes that seem to permanently leave each side in the grip of unrelenting suspicion and animosity. For most Jews, both inside Israel and outside, the experience of being under attack by Palestinians and other Arabs is difficult to distinguish, at least psychologically, from the history of brutal persecution at the hands of the goyim (literally, strangers, but the word refers to all those who are not Jewish). For them, this is but one more episode of attempted annihilation by those who hate Jews.
