Secondary teachers have to teach set topics at set times. They have responsibility for five or six times the number of children, yet meet them only intermittently, and have little time or opportunity to discover what they have been doing and learning in between. What ‘differentiation’ means in a secondary context is necessarily shaped by this framework of subject teaching. Children transferring to secondary school must learn to fit in with ways of working which do not allow the same freedom that they have perhaps been used to.
It often seems to be taken for granted that grouping by ability is necessary if we are to ensure that children’s individual learning needs are met. However, my observations suggest that groups made up of children who all have difficulties with literacy and lack confidence in their abilities as learners do not make productive learning groups and absorb a disproportionate amount of teachers’ time. , and each child is assigned a particular task in the team, that is, individual children are using their particular strength to contribute to the team as a whole.
The project is planned to run over three years, gradually working its way through the curriculum areas. We have been fortunate in that considerable resources have been invested in creating timetable remission for the teachers directly involved in development work.
