But I can't say I fish for pike, bass, panfish, carp, and whatever to protect the environment or to relieve the pressure on trout streams. Nor do I fish for bluegills in the apologetic spirit of so many of the magazine articles that have been written about them: that is, because they're closer to home. Where I live, trout are closer. Fishing through the ice may be required, as might trolling with lead-core line or downriggers. The use of live bait may be necessary to catch fish at all times of the year. Conventional tackle permits fishing in all of these situations, but we're flyfishers. We can't work great depths effectively, we don't use live bait, and we don't really troll. With our tackle, we have to find fish when they're in comparatively shallow water, and that factor alone serves to reduce the complexity of lake fishing for us enormously.
