This is Central Pacific locomotive No. 1, the first engine to be placed in construction service on the western end of the transcontinental railroad. The ancient Greeks thought of the idea for a railroad. Among the many artifacts chronicling the company's 153-year history are a locomotive bell, railroad maps, stock books and the mail contract with the Confederate government. Construction began in 1876 but it was soon halted due to the railroad's failure to pay the construction contractors. (Hilton 1990, p 557) The Fond du Lac, Beaver Dam, Columbus & Madison Railroad was chartered on March 23, 1852, to connect its namesake cities. (Meyer 1898, p 298) The Fort Winnebago, Baraboo Valley & Minnesota Railroad was chartered on March 13, 1851. (Meyer 1898, p 297) In 1866, the Fox Lake Railroad completed construction of 2.7 miles of track from Fox Lake Junction to Fox Lake. (RLHS 1937, p 20 and 24) The Galena & Southern Wisconsin Railroad was incorporated on March 2, 1857. (RLHS 1937, p 17) Operations began on the railroad's narrow gauge line between Galena, Illinois, and Platteville, Wisconsin, in 1874, when the railroad was a subsidiary of the C&NW.

March 3, 1927 saw an agreement reached, and the Western Maryland purchased the 74 miles of north-south mainline between Cheat Junction to Bergoo. The new bridge will be several hundred yards above the location of the present underpass. The North Carolina Railroad was ready to enter into a new phase of its history. Early in 1868 this steamboat had started plying the lake between Burlington and Plattsburg carrying railroad cars, passengers and freight. This company leased their property to the N Y, N H & H for one year, this lease being renewed until 1902 when a new lease for 50 years was made.
