The last local independent also began with limited objectives. The Belfast and Moosehead Lake (B&ML) Railroad was founded in 1867 and became operational in 1870. New Mexicans themselves contributed to delays, failing to ratify a state constitution. The Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny Railroad was completed from Pittsburgh to Connellsville in 1883 and, the following year, was leased to the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad for 999 years. A large and varied collection of historic railroad artifacts are on display in the Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History located in the Depot.

The land and people of the Plains and the West changed as an effect of the railroad's incursion. Railroad agents would meet European immigrants as they got off ships in east coast cities and transport them to communities in the West that the railroads reserved for people from specific countries. The Naugatuck Railroad was opened to Waterbury on June 11, 1849 and to Winsted on September 24, 1849. By the early 1990s, more than half of the rail network was electrified, and most rail traffic--both passenger and freight--was carried by electric locomotives.
