The positive outcome of the Union victory was that it gave force to the abolition of slavery, which became illegal in all states with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in early 1865. However, in both Robert Controy’s 1862 and Harry Harrison’s Stars & Stripes Forever, England joins the Confederacy after the Trent Affair, in which the Union seized two Confederate diplomats from a British ship. You cannot conciliate the South, when you place yourself in such a position, that they see they can achieve their independence.
