Letter, 5 and 14 May 1864, from Matthew McCann of Company F, 152nd New York Regiment, to his wife Eliza in Herkimer County, New York, informing her on 5 May that his regiment was moving, and on 14 May describing the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, stating the number of wounded and killed from his company, and thanking God that he was uninjured. Similar Unionist secessions attempts appeared in East Tennessee, but were suppressed by the Confederacy.

White dockworkers attacked and destroyed brothels, dance halls, boarding houses, and tenements that catered to blacks; mobs stripped the clothing off the white owners of these businesses. A few days after his wife's departure, Dabney began reporting Confederate movements to members of Hooker's staff. Medical notebook, 1863[?], of Robert Alonzo Brock (1839-1914), while he was serving as a steward at Winder Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. The plan enjoyed some significant successes, including the establishment of a system of free public schools, the creation of a public university at Fayetteville, and the construction of more than 650 additional miles of railroad track.

Shenandoah, 19 December 1864 - 2 November 1865; and printed material including copies of Confederate naval orders and newspaper clippings. Indeed, it is pervasive among historians. The first of these was the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Colored Regiment, led by white officer Robert Gould Shaw.

England has reduced her complaint to a mere error of procedure, a technical blunder of which she had made herself systematically guilty in all her maritime wars, but against which the United States have never ceased to protest, and which President Madison, in his message inaugurating the war of 1812, expatiated upon as one of the most shocking breaches of international law. With free States on either side, of them, they must abolish slavery, or it will abolish itself. In 1850, another tenuous compromise was negotiated to resolve the question of territory won during the Mexican War.

The majority of the collection consists of letters written to William Ransom Johnson (1782-1849), Mary (Evans) Johnson (1785-1843), and Virginia (Johnson) Pegram (1810-1888). The most notable of men offering freedom was Robert Carter III of Virginia, who freed more than 450 people by "Deed of Gift", filed in 1791. He turned north in the direction of Resaca, Georgia, and joined with Joseph Wheeler 's cavalry, which had been previously raiding in Tennessee.

He actively supported the organization of the Ant-slavery Society of Illinois which enraged the Alton citizens. Tariffs were taxes placed on imported goods, the money from which would go to the government. It must be a much larger army than we have been accustomed to have in the late Union-it must be large in proportion to the armv that it will have to meet.
